Are you looking for the best zero waste shampoo and conditioner? I’m happy to say I’ve found it – Plaine Products! I’ve been using this brand for years and I can happily and whole heartedly say their liquid shampoo and conditioner is amazing. Literally, it’s the stuff my hair craves the most. If you know anything about Plaine Products, you know they’re famous for their refill system – everything is very closed loop and zero waste friendly. Most conventional shampoo and conditioner come in plastic bottles – if you have long hair like me, you’re likely to go through those bottles quite fast. But this zero waste shampoo and conditioner is different – it comes in aluminum bottles that you can return and get refills of when you run out. Not to mention the ingredients are all-natural and don’t pollute waterways! You can’t get much better than that. Lets take a closer look and see why I love this zero waste shampoo and conditioner so much.

The Best Zero Waste Shampoo + Conditioner
What is Plaine Products?
For starters, lets talk about what Plaine Products is. This brand is founded by two sisters, Lindsey and Alison, who share a dream of less plastic in the world.
That’s why they started Plaine Products – a line of hair care and skincare that’s vegan, cruelty-free, all-natural and zero waste. Each one of their products comes in an aluminum bottle that can be returned and refilled once it’s empty. You can check out their line here.
I’m personally obsessed with their citrus lavender shampoo and conditioner – though they do have another scent I’ve yet to try just yet.
Plaine Products sells way more than just shampoo and conditioner too – they sell body wash, hand wash, body lotion, face wash, and face moisturizer as well. All of which can be returned and refilled. You can shop their entire product line here.
They have full sized products (16 oz bottles) and travel sized products (2.5 oz bottles). The travel bottles can be reused over and over again – if you order a full size product, you can just pour some into the travel bottle when you go on vacation.
Plaine Products offers subscriptions where you can build your own bundle of products to have shipped to you at your convenience. You can schedule exactly when you’d like your products to come. For example, you can receive shampoo every month, conditioner every two months, so it’s fully customizable.
When you subscribe you get 10% off your purchase, plus 10% off purchases over $50. Also, just for my audience alone, Plaine Products was kind enough to setup a 20% discount – all you need to do is enter the code GREENIFYME at checkout! It’ll work on anything you order from there – not just hair care products.
Of course, you don’t have to create a subscription to purchase these products. You can also purchase your products individually, without any recurring billing (that’s what I do). The choice for a one-time purchase is lovely because these products tend to last a while. If you choose this option, you can request a refill, or simply return your bottles, at your own pace.
Why should I switch to zero waste shampoo + conditioner?
There’s so much plastic on this Earth – we’ve generated over 8.3 billion tons of it, to be exact. Of that, only 9 percent has actually been recycled.
Clearly, recycling isn’t the end all solution we make it out to be. The best option is to cut back our plastic consumption as a whole.
Conventional shampoo and conditioner comes in plastic bottles. Did you know in the U.S. alone, more than 552 million bottles of shampoo and conditioner end up in landfills each year? That’s a lot of waste.
What makes matters worse is one plastic bottle can take 1,000 years to decompose. Until then, it’ll leach harmful chemicals into the environment and possibly wind up in our waterways.
Before I went zero waste, I’d go through at least one bottle of each shampoo and conditioner per month – adding up to 24 bottles a year (give or take). Heaven knows where they are now. Even if they did get recycled, they’d just be downcycled into a lesser quality item (plastic can never be the same item twice!).
Also, conventional shampoo and conditioner tend to have questionable ingredients that do more damage than good to your hair. Plus, when they wash down the drain they harm waterways!
Shampoo and conditioner bottles don’t have to be so wasteful. That’s why it’s so important we make the switch to zero waste shampoo and conditioner that works, like Plaine Products or shampoo bars.
I get not everyone is into the idea of solid shampoo or conditioner – and that’s where Plaine Productsreally shine. It’s liquid shampoo and conditioner – minus the plastic. More on that in a moment.
What makes Plaine Products zero waste?
Plaine Products packages all their items in aluminum bottles that can be returned and reused. Your first purchase will come with pumps – you just recycle the aluminum caps, put the pumps in their place and you’re ready to go. You can reuse them over and over again and request no new pumps with your next order.
When the refill arrives, you can put the empty bottles in the same box the refill shows up in and send it back to Plaine Products for free. It comes with a free shipping label.
Even if you don’t want a refill, you can return the bottles easily so they’ll get refilled and reused for someone else.
This creates a closed loop system with minimal waste that results in a lot less plastic in our landfills and oceans.
Fun fact, aluminum is the most recyclable material in the world. That’s why it makes an excellent choice for this!
The bottles you send back to Plaine Products really do get reused too – they get refilled and shipped to other people. For this reason, sometimes you’ll get a bottle with a dent in it – that’s okay though because that just goes to show they really are being reused! If anything, to me, it adds character.
There’s a subscription option available as well, which is amazing and quite handy for those who enjoy knowing they will never run out of their products. You can customize your bundle and have something ship every two, three, four or six months.
If you choose to do a one-time purchase, that’s fine too. Whenever you’re ready for a refill, you can just request them to send you a free shipping label, as to return your empties.
Also – you can choose whether or not you need pumps with your order. The pumps themselves may be plastic but I’ve been using the same pumps for several years now. I haven’t needed to order new ones, so I always opt out. I’ll only get new pumps with my order if one breaks – this reduces waste a ton load!
They also ship everything plastic-free! Everything comes in a cardboard box with no plastic what so ever. It’s truly a beautiful sight.
So just to recap, here’s what makes Plaine Products zero waste:
Plaine Products bottles are made from aluminum – the most recyclable material in the world.
You can get the bottles refilled or return the bottles for reuse, even if you don’t want a refill.
You can put the empty bottles you’re returning in the same box the refills show up in.
The bottles you send back actually get reused – sometimes you’ll get a bottle with a dent in it, but this just proves they’re getting reused (and adds character).
There’s a subscription option available that’s fully customizable.
You can also purchase one-time only (which is what I do) – then request a refill whenever you’re ready.
The pumps that come with your first order are plastic but can be reused for years.
Everything ships plastic-free!
What makes this the best zero waste shampoo + conditioner?
Simply put – it’s so hard to find liquid shampoo and conditioner that’s zero waste. The most common option is shampoo bars – but not everyone likes them.
There are so many people hooked to the idea of their shampoo and conditioner being liquid. That’s why Plaine Products work – they give you that luxury without the plastic. You don’t have to sacrifice anything.
Plus, it actually works. Seriously – I constantly get compliments on my hair, all thanks to this shampoo and conditioner!
The ingredients are top knotch, all-natural, vegan and cruelty-free. I never have to worry about what I’m rubbing onto my scalp thanks to that. The ingredients also play a role in why it works so well – aloe vera is the very first ingredient, so it’s super nourishing to your hair and scalp.
Plus….their products smell out of this world good! I’m in love with the citrus lavender scent. They also have rosemary mint vanilla, but I’ve never tried that. I’m sure it smells just as amazing though! I’m just too hooked to citrus lavender to try it…
This brand is also kicking some serious butt in the sustainability department. They’re a certified B corporation and also a member of 1% For The Planet – meaning they donate 1% of their annual sales to environmental nonprofits.
Everything is made in the USA too, which means it takes less time to get to you, resulting in fewer carbon emissions. And lets face it – supporting small, local businesses are always better than big corporations.
Plaine Products is also women owned – this is important to me because I love supporting fellow women who have the same mindset and morals as myself.
Not to mention it’s a completely zero waste, closed loop system. Plaine Products is probably the first shampoo and conditioner brand to do anything like this. In fact, I cannot name any other brands that do this with their hair care and skin care products – that’s dedication.
You also cannot beat the price for how long it lasts you. Initially, $60~ seems like a lot of money for shampoo and conditioner, but oh my gosh is it worth it! I don’t know how, but my shampoo and conditioner literally lasted me nine months. Nine months!
The results you get from this shampoo is unbelievable too. It really does work! Not only will it clean your hair, but if you follow my instructions precisely, you’ll be amazed at the results. Your hair will be shiny, soft and so managable – it’s not even funny.

Only four pumps of this stuff is all you really need – just make sure to scrub it into your hair good. You’ll probably run out of shampoo before conditioner though, as a general note. Try this shampoo with the conditioner for the best results.

How do you use this zero waste shampoo + conditioner?
Now, down to basics – how do you actually use this shampoo and conditioner? Well…it’s pretty straight forward. Just like you would regular shampoo and conditioner.
Once you’ve got your awesome Plaine Products – just put them in the shower with you. I keep mine in the corner of my tub. Then, when you’re ready to, use four pumps of each product in your hair.
First, massage four pumps of Plaine Products shampoo into your hair using your fingers. Make sure it lathers and gets all sudsy. Use it as a good excuse to give yourself a nice scalp massage! Let it sit in your hair for about two minutes before rinsing it out – this ensures a more thorough cleanse.
Then, use four pumps of Plaine Products conditioner and coat it on the ends of your hair to your shoulders. Never use conditioner at the top of your hair – it will make your roots look all greasy.
Let the conditioner sit in your hair for about 2 to 3 minutes to give your hair extra hydration before you wash it out.
Last but not least, brush and blow dry your hair. You will be amazed at the results – I know I was. When I do this, my locks became super soft, managable, and full of life.
I love just running my fingers through it – and so do my friends. They’re always commenting on how soft my hair is. It’s all thanks to this stuff!
Even day after hair looks incredible. In fact, I’ve gotten compliments on my hair even up until day three without washing it – though that’s usually where I draw the line and give it a good wash.
Any shampoo and conditioner that works this well without creating waste deserves a round of applause.
How does ordering and returning work?
It may sound elaborate, but ordering from Plaine Products is a piece of cake. Here are the steps you need to take.
Step 1 – Order your preferred products. Replace lid with pump.
Step 2 – When your bottle is low, order a refill, or subscribe and Plaine Products will send the refill automatically.
Step 3 – When the bottle is empty, rinse it out and switch the pump over to the refill bottle. Use the return label to send back the empty bottle.
Super simple, am I right?
Here’s a video that explains this process as well:
If you don’t want a refill for whatever reason, you can always just return empty bottles here too.
You can make a one-time purchase, build a personalized bundle of products, or create a subscription. At any time, you can change your subscription too, so there’s no worries.
Also, don’t forget to use discount code GREENIFYME for 20% off at checkout!

Hey there! Thanks so much for this info! Since starting a zero waste lifestyle I have used solid shampoo and conditioner, but I love the item of a closed system like Plaine Products uses. I'm not sure if they would ship to Alberta Canada where I am, but I'd love to be able to find a company closer to home like this. I know a lot of people especially are hesitant to use bar soap for body wash because they feel it is unsanitary when guests visit. I always think they are forgetting the purpose of soap… cleaning! But this is a great reminder that there are always sustainable options for everything we use. 🙂 If you're interested, I have a zero waste blog too that I started about 6 months ago (so it's still pretty new). You can find it at apintsizedimpact.com/
