Do you ever crave ooey-gooey homemade brownies out of the blue? I did last night and decided to whip up these bad boys. It’s got that nice flaky top with chocolate chunks inside. They were so simple to make and prep only took about 10 minutes max. I was eating one in a little under an hour while curled up on my couch, enjoying a scary movie. Does it get any better than that? If you’re craving something chocolatey, without much hassle, indulge in these homemade brownies from scratch. Better than store-bought!

The Best Homemade Brownies From Scratch

Why make your own brownies?
I discuss baking a lot on this zero waste blog, and for good reason! Baking is a great way to get into sustainability.
Hear me out: Most ingredients can be found plastic-free, in paper; baking from scratch cuts down on packaging waste; and most of the ingredients are probably already in your pantry.
When we grab store-bought goodies they’re usually packaged in plastic. Plus, loaded with preservatives and other questionable ingredients.
Considering the average American creates 4.9lbs of trash per day…we should certainly cut back on waste where we can. And if that means baking yummy delicious treats more? Sign me up.

Ingredients:
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2/3 cup cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar (make your own by blending 2 cups granulated sugar + 2 tbs cornstarch in a blender!)
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips
- Pinch of sea salt
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup sunflower (or olive) oil
- 2 tbs water
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
Note: Most of these ingredients can be found in paper, cardboard, or glass packaging. You can also visit a refillery for even more low-waste options. But using up whatever’s already in your pantry is always the most sustainable choice!
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. In a bowl, mix all the dry ingredients together. Then, add in all the wet ingredients and combine. The mixture will be very dense, but this is normal.
- Line a square pan with compostable parchment paper (ideally one that’s 8×8 but I used this Caraway 9×9 – it made my brownies a little thinner but still tasty). Pour the mixture in and smooth the top with a silicone baking spatula. Make sure it’s as even as possible.
- Bake for 40 minutes, or until a fork comes out clean. Wait until it cools until slicing (about 10-20 minutes). Store in an airtight container (or devour them on sight). Makes about 9 brownies. Enjoy!
