Review: Kutoa Bars - Chocolate Banana + Blueberry Almond

By: Ariana Palmieri
As promised, here is my in-depth review of the free Kutoa Bars I received via an Instagram giveaway! If you haven't seen my unboxing video of it yet, check it out here. Fun fact: This was the first giveaway I've ever won, so I was really surprised and excited! I was extremely pleased with these bars, and if you like this sort of post (featuring a healthy food unboxing and then a review), I'll do more in the future!

The basics

About the company:

I must admit, this company is quite impressive. It was founded by a young entrepreneur, Joey Grassia, back in 2009 who was appalled by what malnutrition could do after time spent in South Asia where it was common for children to go to sleep hungry. He had his own health scare too: Despite his intense workout regime and strict calorie intake, he was getting severe migraines and sharp pains in his chest. The cause of his illness stemmed from his high intake of unhealthy processed foods. After seeing a doctor, he realized he couldn't take his health for granted anymore. According to Grassia, "without our health we have nothing". It was on this motto that he founded Kutoa Bars - he was dead set on not only providing a healthy snack alternative, but also on a mission to help starving children in undeveloped countries. And boy, did he! His company is outstanding: For every bar you buy, Kutoa feeds a child in need. Great right? Kutoa reaches children all over the world, from developing countries to children living in the united states. From micronutrient packs for infants to healthy sandwiches for older kids, Kutoa provides healthy food options for each child according to their age, location, and specific dietary needs. They have given over 500,000 meals to children in need to this day. That's certainly more than I ever have (unfortunately).

Overall health benefits:

These bars are all natural, vegan (but you don't have to be vegan in order to love them - after all, I'm not vegan!), dairy free (perfect for anyone with lactose intolerance), gluten/wheat free, non-GMO (because who needs genetically modified ingredients in their food?), and soy free. Not to mention they're also made with no preservatives and no added sugar. Pretty sweet huh? Each bar has a healthy, balanced mixture of nuts, whole fruit, chia seeds, and flax seeds. Chia and flax seeds are powerful superfoods too - something you should eat as often as possible - and these bar makes it nice and easy to do just that.
Note: These bars are a great aid in digestion, so be prepared - you might need to use the restroom if you eat more than one!

Why you want it: If you love chocolate covered bananas, but crave a guilt-free version of it, this is your new go-to!

My review: This flavor was my absolute favorite out of both of them. The other one was definitely yummy, and totally worth trying, but this one was gone very quickly. I received at least 12 full sized bars in this box, and now I only have one left (not to mention my parents loved them)! I'm a sucker for chocolate, and it really did taste like a chocolate covered banana. The texture of the bar was soft and chewy, and just a tad crunchy here and there (I blame the nuts- not like I minded). There weren't any actual chunks of banana or chocolate chips in it either.Instead the ingredients inside the bar were blended and ground up pretty well. However, the bar was not over-processed at all: You can clearly see and feel that as soon as you open the package, which I really liked. It gave it a raw, all-natural feel I don't see in most snack bars (aside from granola bars - but those aren't nearly as soft and chewy as these). The chocolate taste wasn't overpowering though, and neither was the banana. It mixed together well and balanced each other out, creating a unique taste all its own. Unfortunately, the ingredients on the box were a little different from the ones listed on the site, and the packaging was different from the pictures on the site. While these were minor issues I had with these products, it did make things a little confusing. I'm not sure if they just didn't update the pictures/ ingredients on the site yet, or if they made a separate batch just for me, which is a little misleading. Thankfully though, the products on the package weren't so outrageously different from the ones on the site - if they were, I'd consider that a bigger problem. Below, I'll list both the ingredients on the package and the website so you can see for yourself what I mean. I didn't think this was too big of a deal, but I did find it weird (after all, why change the ingredients/ order of them just for one person, you know?). Despite this, I really liked these bars and can totally see myself purchasing this flavor in the future!

Chocolate Banana Ingredients:
On package: Dates, Organic Bananas (With Organic Rice Flour), Gluten Free Oats, Brown Rice Syrup, Organic Pea Crisps (Organic Pea Protein, Organic Rice Flour), Chocolate Chips (Organic Cane Sugar, Unsweetened Chocolate, Cocoa Butter), Brown Rice Powder, Brown Rice Protein, Flax seeds, Organic Chia Seeds, Vanilla Extract, Sea Salt

On the website: Gluten Free Oats, Organic Pea Crisps (Organic Pea Protein, Organic Rice Flour), Brown Rice Syrup, Date Paste, Organic Agave Syrup, Semi-Sweet Chocolate (Organic Cane Sugar, Unsweetened Chocolate, Cocoa Butter), Organic Bananas, Chia Seeds, Organic Flax seeds, Vanilla Extract, Sea Salt

Why you want it: If you like subtle hints of blueberry with a slight nutty after taste, this is for you.

My review: As much as I liked this bar, it couldn't compare to the chocolate banana one for me. I was a little disappointed with the taste - I was hoping it would be a little more bold and distinct. While the chocolate banana bar was subtle in taste too, this one was even more subtle. I would have liked to taste the blueberry a little more. Every once and a while I would taste the blueberry a little more strongly, which was always pleasant, but I wish I would've tasted it more consistently. I didn't really taste too much of the almond either, but I could tell it was in there because this bar had a more nutty texture to it when I bit into it than the other. In a way, i tasted the dates a little bit more than anything else( I didn't mind- I like dates)! However, the texture (chewy and soft) was the same as the chocolate banana bar and it really pleased my palate. I don't like it when bars are too hard and crunchy (like granola bars) because then they fall apart and get all messy. This was nice and easy to eat, and similar to the other bar, highly unprocessed. Unfortunately, just like the chocolate banana bars, the ingredients on the box were a little different from the ones listed on the site, and the packaging was different. Aside from that, I'm grateful for getting to try this product for free and really wish there was a Kutoa store near me!

Blueberry Almond Ingredients:
On package: Dates, Gluten Free Oats, Brown Rice Syrup, Organic Pea Crisps (Organic Pea Protein, Organic Rice Flour), Blueberries (Blueberries, Apple Concentrate, Sunflower Oil), Brown Rice Powder, Almonds, Brown Rice Protein, Flax Seeds, Organic Chia Seeds, Vanilla Extract, Sea Salt.

On the website: Gluten Free Oats, Date Paste, Organic Pea Crisps (Organic Pea Protein, Organic Rice Flour), Brown Rice Syrup, Almonds, Organic Agave Syrup, Blueberries (Blueberries, Apple Concentrate, Sunflower Oil), Chia Seeds, Organic Flax Seeds, Vanilla Extract, Sea Salt

The (quick) rundown

Pros: The pros outweigh the cons:
1) Each bar had a unique taste and texture.
2) Definitely lives up to its values and standards of being vegan, all-natural, etc.
3) Were a healthy alternative to other snacking options.
4) My friends and family really liked them too.
5) I really admired Kutoa's humanitarian ethics and would gladly support buying from them in the future.

Cons: There were only a few (mostly minimal) things I noticed about the bars I wasn't too fond of:
1) The ingredient list on each box was different from the ingredient list on the website, but only by a few ingredients/ order of ingredients.
2) The packaging was different from the one on the website (not that important, just a bit misleading).
3) The blueberry bars could have been a little bolder in taste (again, minor con).

Conclusion: I'd totally purchase one of these flavors (probably the chocolate banana ones) in the future - or else my mom just might do it for me!

5 Ways to Appreciate June's Birth Flower, The Rose

By: Ariana Palmieri
Who doesn't love roses? I know I do. Not only are they pretty to look at, but they nourish dry skin, have anti-inflammatory properties, and calm people downThankfully, June is the month where you have an excuse to go rose-crazy. In June, roses are at their peak and anyone born in Gemini shares the rose as their birth flower. Birth flowers are similar to birthstones, in the sense they capture each zodiac sign's essence. Roses capture the vibrant, passionate energy Geminis bring to everything they do. However, you don't have to be a Gemini (or even believe in horoscopes), to invoke the beautifying and healing power of the rose this month. All you have to do is give these simple techniques a go.

Make Your Own Rose Water

Rosewater not only makes a refreshing facial mist, but it even has antibacterial properties. The best part is rose water is easy to make. All you need is some distilled water, an empty bottle with a lid, your choice color of roses, and a saucepan with a cover. Start by rinsing off the rose petals with cold water to get rid of any potential chemicals, then remove the petals. Place them in a saucepan that's filled with distilled water. Then, cover the saucepan and let it simmer until the petals lose their color. Drain the liquid into the empty bottle of your choice and let it cool off. Feel free to use it as a facial/body mist, toner, or even for aromatic purposes.

Draw or Paint Roses (As Best You Can)

Even if you're not the best artist, it's fun to let your creativity take hold and let go of being in control. Drawing or painting roses will help you appreciate their beauty with each fine detail you re-create. If you can, find a place out in nature you can sit and observe a rose whose beauty inspires you most. You can either draw or paint it right there as a still-life, take a picture of it for later reference, or try to mimic it from memory. Which ever technique you choose, let yourself get into your own creative flow. Here you have endless possibility, and be sure to promise yourself you won't judge your final creation too harshly! Really admire the rose you chose to capture and feel your hand connecting with it through your pencil or paintbrush with each careful stroke. When you're done, feel free to color it, if it's a drawing, and frame it, if it's a painting.

Buy or Grow a Rose Bush

Who can resist the charm of actually owning a rose bush? If you don't have a green thumb, or a lot of room, no worries. Chances are your local grocery store sells miniature container rose bushes that are easy to care for and can remain indoors. All you have to do is water them once a day and occasionally prune off any dead leaves. However, if you want to grow a rose bush outside, you should choose an easy to grow variety. There are over 100 types of roses to choose from, so it can be an overwhelming process. If you have a lot of space and are new to gardening, knockout roses are a good variety to choose because they are easy to maintain and require little to no fuss. Whichever rose you decide to grow, try to invest in organic roses, soil, and fertilizer as much as possible for the best results.

Drink Some Rose Petal or Rosehip Tea

Rose is an acquired taste, and usually the stronger the smell of the rose, the more robust the flavor. Rosehip tea tends to have a sweet tangy quality, so you may desire to add honey to your tea. Rosehip tea can be purchased at almost any supermarket store, or you can harvest rosehips from an actual rose bush. To do this, let some of the petals on the rose bush completely fall off. A round nub should develop at the base and turn from green to red. Harvest when the nubs are soft and bright red, but make sure the rosehips aren't wrinkly or too soft, as this indicates rotting. You can also make your own rose petal tea. In a similar manner to making rose water, you just have to steep a tablespoon of rose petals into hot water. The longer you steep it, the stronger the flavor will be, but rose petals tend to taste a little more delicate than rosehips.

Go On A Rose Hunt (And Take Pictures)

There's nothing as uplifting as seeing a beautiful rose in an unexpected place. Walk around your neighborhood and see if you can spot any roses growing - guaranteed you will! Whether it's in your neighbor's yard, at the community park, or even a store lot, you might be surprised to find beauty in areas you otherwise overlooked. Make sure you take a camera (or your smartphone), so you can capture the essence of each rose you cross paths with. When you finish, look back on the photos in a quiet area and drink in the wonderful healing beauty each rose unfolds before you. Take a deep breath in through the nose for five seconds, then exhale slowly as you meditate on their radiant energy. Repeat. Stay in this meditative state for as long as you like as you continue to admire the roses, as well as the way you were able to capture them. Feel your own self-worth for being able to capture each particular flower's healing essence. When you're ready, slowly come out of your meditative state and be sure to share your stunning rose pictures with friends and family!

Review: June Goddess Provisions Box - Lucid Dreaming

By: Ariana Palmieri
As promised on my new YouTube channel, here's my honest and in-depth review of the June Goddess Provisions box. If you haven't seen my latest (and first) video of me unboxing the Goddess Provisions box, check it out here. I thoroughly enjoyed this subscription box and am looking forward to the next one!

Lucid Dreaming Soothing and Calming Tea
Anima Mundi Apothecary

Why you want it: Almost instantly makes you relaxed and sleepy!

Its value: $14

My review: I'm definitely a tea fanatic, so I was really excited to see this in the box. I adore its packaging (it's not made out of plastic and it's a loose leaf tea, which eliminates wasting tea bags!) and really like the earthy look to it. Organic, biodynamic, and homemade, this stuff is good for not only sleep-time, but also the environment (an A+ in my book). The ingredients are really amazing too and feature a bunch of plants not found in most conventional teas I've drank. I listed the ingredients for each product in this box in my unboxing video, but I'll write it out here just for transparency sake (and so you can see for yourself if this is a tea you'd enjoy): Passionflower, skullcap, kalea, ashwagandha, kava kava, blue lotus, rama tulsi, blue cornflowers, ginger, rose petals, and stevia leaf. With those ingredients combined, it was a very warm tea blend. Due to the ginger (and a few other ingredients, I'm sure), it had a slight kick (a slight spice, if you will) to it. Usually I prefer more floral or fruity teas, but this was surprisingly pleasing. However, the most incredible part about it was that I almost instantly started getting sleepy. I hadn't even finished it yet (I was about halfway through) when my eyelids started getting droopy! I wasn't too surprised since most of the ingredients in the tea are known for aiding with sleep, as the package says, but I was impressed. I also used this in combination with the Lucid Dreaming Elixir, so I'm sure the two combined really knocked me out. To make it, all I had to do was add 2 tablespoons into a cup of boiling water, steep it for 15 minutes, and enjoy. Simple, but effective!

Botanical Dream Lucid Dreaming Elixir
Anima Mundi Apothecary

Why you want it: It works great in putting you to sleep in conjunction with the Lucid Dreaming Soothing and Calming Tea - and smells good too!

Its value: $14 (Already the tea + elixir combined are almost $33 - the actual value of the whole box!)

My review: I must admit, it's harder to review this product simply because I used it in conjunction with the Lucid Dreaming tea. However, I don't doubt that both equally contributed to my sleepy, calm, and overall relaxed mood. Not only that, but I did have dreams and was able to recall them, which is something Goddess Provisions stressed these products would do. So they are effective! As far as lucid dreaming goes, my whole dream was not in and of itself a lucid dream - for the most part, it was just like any other dream (completely random and out of my control). However, there was a part of my dream where I did have control, thus I would say I had a partial lucid dream. Pretty impressive, if you ask me! I'm sure if I keep using these products there will be a chance I can have an entire lucid dream in the near future! Time will only tell, but either way, I thoroughly enjoyed this elixir. It smelt similar to the tea, considering it had almost identical ingredients: Ashwagandha, Passionflower, kava kava, blue lotus, kalia, skullcap, ginger, guayusa, rose petals, vegetable glycerin and filtered water. Just like the tea, it's vegan, organic, and handcrafted. However, this elixir can be added to not just the tea provided, but any tea (to give it an extra boost). According to the elixir, it's also good for deep meditation and stimulating the third eye chakra. I suppose if I were to try this with another tea (one that wouldn't necessarily put me to sleep), it might be better for inducing meditation instead of sleep. However, I cannot fully attest to that since I haven't used it in that way yet (though I'm not past trying!). All I can say is that this works very well in conjunction with the tea, and I highly suggest getting it!

Moon Dust Detox Mask
The Ritual

Why you want it: Makes your skin feel super smooth and brightens the complexion!

Its value: $12 (If you were to buy this individually with the tea + elixir it would = $40 without tax. That's already more money than the subscription box!)

My review: As stated in my unboxing video, I love facial masks. I don't have as many as I wish I did, but I don't doubt that'll change with time! They do such a good job at purifying, correcting, and balancing the skin, and this one is no different. Made with Bentonite (green) clay, lavender, activated charcoal, selenite powder, moonstone powder (selenite and moonstone are gems by the way!), lavender essential oil, German chamomile essential oil, and carrot seed essential oil, this mask is full of natural goodies for your skin! I was so impressed with the ingredient list I couldn't wait to give it a try (I've never tried a mask with grounded up gems in it before, so it sounded really cool!). The beautiful light grey dust in the container really did remind me of the moon too, which is one of my favorite celestial bodies (too beautiful!). However, like magic, the moon dust detox mask changed color right before my eyes when I added water to it in a small bowl: I put approximately (I didn't measure, to be honest) 1/2 teaspoon of the clay into a bowl and added approximately 3/4 teaspoon (again, didn't really measure) of water to it, which turned it a deep grey with a bluish green tint! It was really cool to look at, and the texture of it went from dusty to damp. It really did feel like clay and I used a spoon to mix it (I have to get myself a cruelty free mask brush!), then my fingers to apply it to my face. It felt strange (and looked pretty funny too), but I had fun applying it. Not to mention I got a kick out of scaring my dad with it (not really, he laughed when he saw me). After about 20 minutes I decided it was time to wash it off. I was supposed to wash it off when I felt it getting dry, and I did. It started to make my face get tight and I couldn't really smile or speak very well after a while. Once I washed it off I noticed an immediate difference. My skin felt even smoother than usual and looked vibrant. It was totally worth it, and I'm sure I'll do it again soon!

Sleep Soothing Oil
Essence of Vali

Why you want it: If you love the scent of lavender mixed with earthy tones, you'll love this roll-on oil blend.

Its value: $12

My review: Aromatherapy is amazing, and if you're into it like I am, I think you'd appreciate this oil. Not only is it easy to apply (since it's a roll-on oil), but it smells really nice. Made with jojoba, essential oils of lavender, marjoram, cedarwood and ylang/ylang, this stuff is designed for relaxation. Lavender is known for its soothing properties, and just one whiff of it helps relax the mind. Before I got this oil, I kept some lavender flowers under my pillow in a satchel, but this is just as good, if not better. I rolled on the oil and applied it to my wrists and even a little on my neck before bed.  You can also apply it above your upper lip too, according to the container, but I haven't tried that yet. Eitherway, it's super simple to use. If you like earthy, woodsy scents, you'll also like this oil because it mixes the lavender with exactly that, creating a grounding effect. The only thing I'll warn you about is that the smell is a little strong, so if you have a sensitive nose (like me), you might not want to apply too much. While I don't think this oil contributed too much to my lucid dreaming, I think it helped set the mood for sleep and dreams in general due to its relaxing properties. So I'd recommend giving it a go!

Smart Ash Tooth Whitening Powder
Bedrock and Bloom

Why you want it: A little goes a long way with this powder and it can easily replace your toothpaste, as well as whiten your teeth, almost instantly!

Its value: $30 (for 1 full jar - this alone is only $3 away from the price of the entire Goddess Provisions box -$33 - talk about a deal!)

My review: Who would have thought charcoal could whiten your teeth, let alone cleanse it? Not me, that's for sure. Yet that's exactly what this powder did. Made from only five natural ingredients, such as activated coconut shell charcoal, all natural calcium bentonite clay, certified organic orange peel extract, certified organic frankincense, and certified organic mint extract, this powder is simple but effective. It's a bit messy, so I'd recommend being extra careful with it and staying close to the sink at all times. Make sure you're not wearing anything you really like either, and be prepared to wash your hands (and mouth) afterwards! The charcoal really does get everywhere, even when you are super careful (but that's what makes it fun and unique, if you ask me). All you have to do is wet your toothbrush, then dip a tiny bit of the toothbrush (like the tip) into the powder. Trust me, you don't need much. Then, like you normally would, start brushing! Be prepared - your teeth, gums, and tongue are going to get black. It's really weird to witness, considering it reminded me of something from the walking dead (zombie mouth anyone?), but it was kind of fun too. It made brushing my teeth more amusing, that's for sure. I can't say it really had a taste, or that it even left an after-taste, but I actually liked that. After brushing for 2 full minutes, I rinsed off the toothbrush with water and brushed my teeth again with just water to clean the powder off. I have to admit - it certainly cleaned my teeth. Normal toothpastes don't clean my teeth as well as this powder did, so I was really impressed. Plus, I did notice there was a subtle but evident difference in the whiteness of my teeth. I'm sure that if I continue this practice every day, I'll see even more results in no time (I've already started to!). I'm not sure that this tooth powder necessarily contributed to my lucid dreaming (which wasn't much, mind you - only in one part of my dream did I feel I had control - but it's better than nothing!), but it did help make my night time routine a little more pleasant and exciting.

Spirit Quartz
From South Africa

Why you want it: This beautiful stone is not only a stunning light lavender, but it's also said to promote harmony and alignment, great for inducing sleep.

Its value: $20 ~ (approximate estimate - depends on the size of the stone and the type - this box didn't say where they get their supply from, so I linked to a website I found different variations of it for sale on)

My review: Ah, how I love crystals. This one in particular is stunning and shaped like a point - it could probably even be used as a crystal wand. It's a light lavender color, is about the size of my index finger, and has a glittery appearance to it all its own. Spirit Quartz can vary in color, size, and shape, however, this is the one I received. Unfortunately, Goddess Provisions did not reveal where they bought it from (other than that its from Africa), so I cannot link you to an exact source like I did with the other brands. However, I tried my best to find a website that looked like a reliable supplier of Spirit Quartz, if you are interested. Spirit Quartz is said to encourage harmony within home environments, stimulate peace, and even help with grief from losing a loved one. Due to its harmonious nature, it's also considered a good stone to use for bringing on sleep. I put this under my pillow to see if it would encourage any lucid dreams, but I can't say for sure if it helped or not since I also had the tea and elixir in me, which I felt were the products that were most effective in stimulating lucid dreams. However, whether you believe in crystals are not, or prefer to simply collect them for their beauty, you should definitely consider investing in Spirit Quartz. It might have helped if I cleansed, charged, and programmed the Spirit Quartz before I put it under my pillow too. If you're unfamiliar with what that means, no worries. Cleansing a crystal can be done in various ways: Simply run the crystal under some water, or smudge it with some sage. While doing so, picture all the past energy the crystal may have absorbed leaving it. To charge a crystal, you can leave it out in the sun or moonlight (just make sure it won't lose color- some crystals are very sensitive to light) for a little while (at the least I would recommend an hour). To program a crystal, simply hold it in your hand, close your eyes, and affirm over and over again (aloud or in your head) what you desire from that crystal. If I had done all those things (in that precise order) the first time with my crystal, and then placed it under my pillow, perhaps it would have increased my chances to lucid dream even further.

Review: Goe Body Oil

By: Ariana Palmieri
To be honest, I don't normally use body oils. Instead, I'll usually go for body lotion (especially if it's rose scented). But I have to hand it to this one: It caught my attention. Check out why you might want to give Geo Oil a try this summer below:

Why you want it: Not only will it leave you smelling like  a tropical island, but its versatile nature may surprise you - you can use it as a traditional all-over body moisturizer or even as a makeup remover - the choice is yours!

What it costs: $48

My review: Though I'm not typically a fan of body oils, I was sincerely impressed with this one. I received it as a sample from Credo when I went to the store's opening in New York City for my internship supervisor (check out her website here, she's amazing). Made out of 28 plant, fruit, and flower butters and oils, it's completely vegan, natural, and cruelty free. If you're looking for something a little lighter than a body butter, but just as nourishing, this is it. With jojoba oil as a key ingredient, it quickly absorbs into your skin. After all, jojoba oil highly resembles the skin's natural sebum (an oily secretion that helps lubricate and protect human skin and hair). Thankfully, this means the body oil isn't too greasy or thick (which is good, cause I hate that feeling). However, the best part about it, to me, is the smell:
Monoi from Tahiti gives it a subtle but extremely pleasing floral aroma. Before getting this oil, I had no idea what monoi was, so if you're lost too, let me explain. Monoi oil is an infusion made from soaking gardenia tahitensis (try saying that name ten times fast), a beautiful, white six petaled flower, in coconut oil. Pretty cool, huh? To apply this oil, all you need to do is put some on your hands and rub it into your skin. The great thing about this is that it's actually gentle enough to use on your face too. According to, you can massage it into your face, use it as a makeup remover, or even moisturize a dried out nose (due to a cold) with the oil. While I can't say I've ever used it to moisturize my nose (haven't had a cold yet - fingers crossed that doesn't change!), I have used it on my face and can say without a shadow of a doubt it's gentle on my skin (and trust me, I'm sensitive to everything). Plus, it's great to use when you know you'll be stepping out onto the beach (gives you a tropical vibe that screams OCEAN). So all in all, I highly recommend getting this body oil and giving it a shot. If you do, or have already, let me know what you think in the comments below!
