Review: TaraLee Natural Beauty Shop

Thursday, September 29, 2016

By: Ariana Palmieri
You know when you find really cool Etsy stores that sell products you can't resist? That's basically how I felt when I found TaraLee Natural Beauty - I loved all her items as soon as I saw them. Thankfully, I was able to try some for myself - Tara Bolin was kind enough to send me some free samples for review. I adore roses (this is no news to those who know me), so I went for her rose themed products. As a disclaimer I feel I should say I wasn't paid to review these items. I am simply expressing my honest review of them. Want to see what I have to say? Then keep scrolling, greenifiers.

About the company
Etsy is a great place to find the most unique, hand crafted items. This business is no different: It is a one-woman run shop based in Logan, Ohio that features many different products from sugar scrubs to mouth wash. Created by Tara Bolin, this shop mainly specializes in natural skincare products, but does offer a few other products for hair and oral care. All her products are free of harsh chemicals like fragrances, parabens, and sulfates. Plus they're super affordable: None of her products surpass $10! That's a win just in and of itself. Tara opened her shop on June 16, 2014, so it's still relatively new. She also has her own website, where you can follow her blog for fun DIYs, and check in on which of her products are up for sale on Etsy. All the ingredients she uses in her products are all-natural and have great scores on EWG (Either a 1 or 2 - which means very low hazard). The products I tried all had ingredients with low hazard scores (mainly 1s - and only one 2, which is still really good), so I was satisfied with the safety of these goodies. You can find Tara on various social media sites, such as YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter for more information on her line (her YouTube channel is especially fun to watch, FYI). Just make sure you snatch u the goodies you want quick - she's always changing her inventory around to make sure her products are as fresh as possible!

Why you want it: This rose face wash won't irritate your skin (because it's very gentle) and actually helps reduce breakouts.

Its value: $3 - 9.50 (depends on size you want - I tried the 4 oz)

My review: After sticking strictly to Juice Beauty products for so long (I was using their 30 day acne solutions kit - read about it here), it was refreshing to switch up my skincare routine. I thought this face wash looked interesting because I've never tried an all-natural rose cleanser before. To apply, I just shook the bottle, lathered some of it in my hands, and then massaged it onto my face. To be honest, I would've liked to smell the rose scent a little more. Instead I couldn't quite pin down the smell (it wasn't a bad one, but it kind of had a doughy-scent for some reason). In terms of effectiveness, it didn't irritate my skin (like some other cleansers have in the past), but it didn't do the best job of getting rid of my makeup. To be fair, the face wash never claims to be a makeup remover, but I assumed it was. I used it morning and night and it always preformed better in the morning. However, after using it at night I would notice my eye makeup would still be on, so I had to wash that area repeatedly and thoroughly in order for it to come off. It didn't sting my eyes or anything like that, but I was hoping for something a little more powerful. I later realized she had an eye makeup remover available for customers in her shop (you can get it here), which would've definitely came in handy. However, I must say this stuff is very moisturizing and did an even better job of clearing up my acne than the Juice Beauty kit did! The day before I started using this stuff I had a really big pimple on my cheek. The next day, after I used this and the clay mask, it went down a lot. I won't lie, I was impressed. So while I have some critiques of this face wash, I must admit it's very nourishing and didn't strip my face of any nutrients. I actually really liked it and would recommend this to anyone who doesn't wear much makeup and is looking to try out a new facial cleaner. Plus, I wouldn't be apposed to trying another one of her face washes in the future (compare and contrast, you know?).

Ingredients
Vitamin E oil, Apricot Kernel Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, Castile soap, Distilled water, Glycerin, rose water, rosehip oil, rose geranium essential oil

Why you want it: This lovely rose mud mask will make your skin feel super soft when you wash it off, and help get rid of pimples.

Its value: $9

My review: I have a soft spot for masks, let alone rose masks. As soon as I saw this product I perked up. It sounded like something made for me, and let me tell you, it didn't let me down. When I first opened it, I actually thought it had dried up, but I quickly discovered I was wrong. The mask isn't one of those add-water-then-mix sorts: You apply it, as is, directly to your face. I loved how it came with a little tiny scooper too. I used that to scoop some of the mask (about the size of a dime) onto my finger. You can use it as a spot treatment, but I decided to cover my entire face with it. The only place I avoided was my eyes. Once it was on, I made sure to leave it there for 10 - 20 minutes. The longer the better. Eventually it dried on my skin and got really tight, which meant it was working. I could barely move my lips and it looked like someone had rubbed actual mud all over my face. When the 10-20 minute mark passed, I simply washed it off with water. My skin felt super soft and moisturized afterwards. So much so I kind of became a little addicted to it. I used it three times  week, as advised on the package, and was tempted to use it for more days (but didn't because I needed to give my skin a break). All in all, I definitely recommend this mud mask to anyone who wants clearer skin, loves masks, and adores roses.

Ingredients
Rose Clay, Bentonite Clay, Vitamin E Oil, Rose Geranium Essential Oil (I love how simple this list is).

The (quick) rundown

The pros: The pros definitely outweigh the cons.
  1. I really admire TaraLee Natural Beauty's standards for clean beauty.
  2. I still have more left over from each sample.
  3. I really loved the rose mud mask, but I believe both products are wonderful for clearing acne (not so much makeup though).
  4. Tara Bolin was super kind, understanding, and accommodating, making her so much fun to work with!
  5. All the ingredients in the products were listed on EWG and had a low hazard rating.
  6. Tara surprised me by sending me both the full-sized products I asked for when I thought I'd be getting just one (thank you Tara!).
  7. Each product is super affordable (nothing over $10).
  8. Purchasing these items at full price would go to a great cause: Supporting home-run green businesses!
The cons: Not many cons at all, honestly.
  1. The face wash didn't get all my makeup off, which was a little bit of a downer.
  2. I noticed the ingredients on the label were the same as the one on Tara's Etsy, but they weren't in the same order - not a big deal, but it made me a bit confused as to how much of each ingredient was in my product.
Conclusion: All in all, I really enjoyed sampling these products. While the face wash could've done a better job at getting rid of my makeup, I still enjoyed using it. None of the products irritated my skin or made me break out. My skin actually looked clearer using these products alone than when I was using the Juice Beauty acne solutions kit. I definitely recommend this small run business to other natural skincare lovers on a budget. Plus, I really want to see women as inspiring and eco-conscious as Tara Bolin succeed. As a young woman myself, it's always motivating to see other women making the switch to natural, eco-friendly makeup. I want to keep supporting all she does, and hope you will too. We greenifiers have to stick together, you know?

Review: September Goddess Provisions Box - Good Vibes Only

Wednesday, September 21, 2016

By: Ariana Palmieri
This month's Goddess Provisions box was filled with so many spiritual goodies. From smudge spray to blue sage, the whole box was filled with tools to help me renew my energy (out with the old, in with the new sort of thing). Not spiritual? No worries, there were other goodies perfect for anyone simply dedicated to living a greener, more natural lifestyle too. Check this Instagram video out to see me show you these goodies up close and personal (no, not in that way, silly).

Chic Chouli - Reinvent + Transform Body Oil
Dancing Love Organics

Why you want it: This soothing body oil is specifically designed to celebrate the journey that is life (plus it comes with a gorgeous malachite stone!).

Its value: $23.95

My review: Normally, Goddess Provisions only includes one crystal per box, but this one has two! Along with the fluorite wand I got, I also received a malachite stone - why you ask? To enhance the effect of this calming body oil. Unlike most body oils, this one is designed to connect you to your mind, not just your body (ironic, ain't it?). It comes with a card that has an affirmation inscribed on the back of it that you can say as you meditate. According to Dancing Love Organics, you're supposed to "take a moment to acknowledge what you have accomplished in this journey" as you apply the body oil onto your skin. Then, you must "give yourself love for this and imagine the infinite possibilities that await you." The malachite stone can be used in this moment of meditative body oil application - you can keep it near you, then hold it when you're done applying the oil. Or, feel free to carry the malachite stone wherever you go. The card also suggests repeating the affirmation (not included in this review - too long) 5 times with your eyes closed. I must admit, I didn't do anything the card suggested. Yet. I have a feeling I will soon, just to give it a try, but that doesn't mean I haven't tried this oil. In fact, I love it. It's very fragrant and I never need much in order to be put into a calm, blissful state. I like to apply it before bed because it's so soothing to me. It also doubles as a great massage oil (wink, wink) - but it won't leave your skin feeling slippery and/or looking like a piece of plastic. It actually absorbs very well into the skin. Unfortunately, the label doesn't say which essential oils they used to make this, but fear not. It's completely vegan, cruelty free, and "handcrafted with love". The scent kind of reminds me of something you might catch a whiff of in church - it reminds me of something sacred, holy, and uplifting. I truly recommend this blend - not to mention the stone is a gorgeous addition to any collection. After all, malachite is known for its protective qualities and ability to absorb negative energy from the atmosphere and body.

Ingredients
Certified Organic, Non GMO, Kosher Sunflower Oil, Cold Pressed Organic Jojoba Oil, Vitamin E, and a proprietary blend of essential oils.

Positive Vibes Only
Enemy to Fashion

Why you want it: If you love quirky pins (or Enemy to Fashion), this will surely make you happy.

Its value: $10

My review: Sometimes, we all need a reminder to stay positive. It can be hard to do that in a world filled with negativity. This pin gets that - but it encourages you to be better than what you see. To be the change you want to see in the world. Fitting exactly into the theme of this box, the 'positive vibes only' pin is the perfect new pin to add to anyone's pin collection. While I must admit I'm not a pin person, I do think this one is rather cute. I like the unique triangle shape and golden lettering. It's also enabled, so that means no accidental pricks to the finger (sorry, but you're not Sleeping Beauty). I'll probably be adding this pin to one of my bags in the future ( I have plenty of bags, trust me), to remind myself to stay upbeat no matter what happens. I recommend this pin to anyone who could use a reminder to stay optimistic (or just really likes knick-knacks).

Towards the Within - Smudge Spray
Momoko Therapeutics

Why you want it: For busy-spiritual people who don't have time to burn sage, this spray will clear your sacred space in no time at all.

Its value: $14

My review: Ever heard of smudging? If not, a smudge ritual is used to cleanse the energy in a home, office, room, person, or object. It's typically done using a sage bundle of some sort (which I also received in this box). While that's all well and good, a smudge spray can do the same job in twice the time (and without the safety hazard burning sage creates). This particular smudge spray is cruelty free, recyclable, and the label is printed on compostable material made from plants. Impressed yet? That's not all: While smudge bundles typically only focus on sage, this spray contains a variety of  other scents such as cedarwood, frankincense, and scotch pine. It's specially crafted using organic and vegan ingredients to help raise your vibration (or whatever you're smudging's vibration). It's also a lot lighter smelling than smoldering sage and its scent doesn't get as deeply absorbed into objects (meaning it won't linger as long). This is good for me, since my nose is extremely sensitive to every little scent I introduce it to. Plus, I definitely felt a little bit more awake and present after each use of this spray. The spraying function also make it easier to smudge things (no fire required), So while I'll never abandon good old fashioned sage (what? It's really fun to light), I can definitely recommend this spray to those strapped on time (or just don't want to accidentally set something on fire).

Ingredients
(Organic & vegan) Aqua, alcohol, and: Bursera graveolens (Palo Santo), Salvia officinalis (sage), Litsea cubeba (may chang), Pinus sylvestris (scotch pine), Myroxylon balsamum (peru balsam), Cedrus atlantica (atlas cedarwood), Boswellia carterii (frankincense) essential oils, polysorbate 20 (from coconut source).

Pink Grapefruit Scented Crystal Point Soap
Moon Souls

Why you want it: This grapefruit scented soap is super cute and uniquely shaped (perfect for a crystal lover, such as myself!)

Its value: $10.95 (make sure you choose the pink color if you want it to look like the one I got - but there are other colors available too!)

My review: I thought this soap looked so cool as soon as I saw it. It kind of reminds me of a rose quartz point (which I totally want to get one day). The smell was really nice too, not too invasive or overpowering - just a subtle grapefruit scent. The list of ingredients is great too: It's filled with nourishing coconut oil, olive oil, and sunflower oil. The only thing I didn't like seeing in the ingredient list was lye. I didn't know what that ingredient was right away (it was the only one I wasn't too sure about on the label), so I did a little digging. Turns out it's used in a lot of homemade soaps and if too much is used, it can be very harsh on skin. However, when combining lye with healthy fats, such as coconut oil and olive oil (which are present in this soap), lye is neutralized and turned into glycerin. This is a process called saponification (you can read more about it here). This makes using lye completely safe, and since this ingredient list also has vegetable glycerin in it, I suspect saponification occurred (making this soap safe to use). Despite this, I tend to avoid soaps with any questionable ingredients (so I probably won't be repurchasing this). However, I'm happy to say the soap didn't irritate my skin (so I'm sure it's safe to continue use).

Ingredients
Coconut oil, coconut milk, water, citric acid, olive oil, lye, vegetable glycerin, palm oil (responsible sources), sunflower oil, mica power blend, grapefruit essential oil, lemon essential oil, orange essential oil

Golden Masala Chai
Blue Lotus Chai

Why you want it: This warming tea blend is vegan, gluten-free, and perfect for the fall days rapidly approaching - it'll keep you nice and cozy without hurting your tummy!

Its value: $8.50 - $396
(Depends on the size you want - mine is the $8.50 one!)

My review: Typically speaking, I prefer sweeter teas to spicier ones. However, I must admit, this tea impressed me. It's far from being finished, but I'm determined to savor it. It's unlike any other tea I've tried before - want to know why? Well, besides one of the ingredients being tumeric, this blend immediately dissolves into water! You don't need to steep it or wait long at all for it to be ready. Plus the packet I got makes 17 cups (that's a great deal if you ask me). I already made 2 cups (one for me, one for my father - he also loved it) and I can happily say it tasted delicious. While it had just a little bit of a kick to it, I'd say it was more warming than anything else. It relaxed me and made me feel all cozy inside (kind of like I was sitting near a nice bonfire). I drank it on a day that was fairly cool too (so I needed the coziness). I can picture this tea coming in handy throughout the fall, for sure. While it's a chai tea, it wasn't overbearing at all. I only added one scoop of raw honey and was fine without any other added sweeteners. However, I would like to try it without any honey, just to see what it would be like. This tea features turmeric, as I mentioned earlier, which makes it extremely healthy (after all, turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties). But turmeric isn't the only super star - maca is in it too, which is known for its mood and energy boosting qualities. In other words, you can't feel sad while drinking this tea. It left me feeling very satisfied and very pleased overall. I can't wait to try another cup! Oh - did I mention it also came with an adorable mini wooden spoon? Too cute!

Ingredients
Naturally brewed and flash-dried black tea powder; 100% Certified Organic powdered spices: ginger, cardamom, nutmeg, black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, turmeric, maca.

Blue Sage Smudge Stick
Goddess Provisions

Why you want it: If you love sage smudge sticks, but don't like how intense the smell is, this blue sage is a lot lighter on the nose (and slightly sweeter smelling).

Its value: $5

My review: I already have a sage smudge stick, but I've never tried blue sage. For anyone curious about it, it's got a sweeter, lighter scent, and the leaves are smaller and thinner than regular sage. Sage  isn't for everyone, so I would advise people who aren't fans of incense to steer clear of this because it tends to be strong. Sage doesn't have to burn long in order to fill a room. To use, all you have to do is light a match and light one end of the sage bundle. You can use a match, a lighter, a candle, or even the stove top to light your sage. You have to be careful because you don't want the sage to burn up - You're supposed to put the flame out. Here's a good video that shows how to light sage (the safe way), especially for beginners. You can blow the flame out or shake it out (as the woman in the video does), whichever works for you. Once I had my blue sage stick smoldering (and not burning), I walked around my room with it to clear the space. After all, blue sage is good for clearing negative energies and purifying thoughts. According to Goddess Provisions, it can be "used in a ritual ceremony, house cleaning, or simply for [its aromatic benefits]". Whatever your purpose, I don't suggest leaving it smoking for too long. The only reason is because its got a very powerful scent and it'll absorb nicely into your space without much effort. I like to leave it smoking for at least 3 minutes for the full benefit, but feel free to do as you please. Personally, I thought the blue sage's scent was even nicer  and lighter than regular sage. It really lifted my spirits and, in some ways, reminded me of maple syrup. Not the kind that's loaded with sugar and artificial mind you - the kind that's all-natural, robust, and dark. Unlike regular sage, if I left it burning longer, I don't think it would've irritated my nose as much. When I was finished, it was very easy to put out. I like to just run it under some cold water and it instantly stops smoldering. There were a few times it went out by itself (it didn't seem to catch fire the same way regular sage did), but I just re-lit it to circumvent this problem.

Fluorite Wand
Goddess Provisions

Why you want it: No it's not a magic wand - (unless you want it to be), but it is a double pointed fluorite crystal (and it's stunning).

Its value: ~$20
(pricing varies - most wands on Etsy are around $20 though!)

My review: I've never had this many crystals in my life before and I think I'm becoming obsessed (thanks Goddess Provisions - no seriously, thank you). I can't help but look forward to every gem I get in these amazing packages! This time around, I had the chance to receive either a fluorite wand or a sodalite wand. I was super excited to see which I got because I didn't have either. The universe clearly wanted me to have fluorite though, which is fine by me. According to Goddess Provisions, "fluorite is said to boost your mental clarity and expand your psychic and spiritual awareness." That sounds really cool, if you ask me. I can feel the energy radiating off this wand too. Have you ever felt that from a crystal? Each one seems to have its own chi, or prana, if you will. If you've never experience that feeling before, I suggest going to a crystal store (not online - I mean physically) and walking over to any crystal you feel most drawn to (maybe you just like how it looks or maybe something deeper is occurring - just let yourself feel what your intuition wants you to feel) and pick it up. You're bound to feel something if you let it sit in your hand. Most crystals, this stone included, have a pulse. They literally come to life in your palm just by holding them. It's as if they are each fragments of the Earth's heartbeat. My fluorite wand in particular is fantastic at directing energy too, simply because of the pointy edges. For example, if I direct it at a specific chakra, I can feel it's energy infusing with it, cleansing it, opening it. If nothing else, it helps me become more aware of my chakras, which are easy to forget about while dealing with the mundane. Despite that, I really do love this fluorite wand and can't wait to continue working with it. The best part? I can cleanse it any time using the smudge spray or the blue sage stick that came with this Goddess Provisions box (or any other crystals I have, for that matter). That's why I love Goddess Provisions - they always find a way to tie everything together.

Review: Juice Beauty - 30 Day Blemish Clearing Solutions Kit

Thursday, September 15, 2016

By: Ariana Palmieri
Acne? No thank you. I've had it since I hit puberty and it is not cute. Being 21 and all, I had high hopes it would dissipate on its own once my teenage years were over. Unfortunately, that didn't really start to happen until I made the switch to green beauty products. From skincare to makeup, I greenified everything that came close to touching my face. While my acne was still present, it wasn't nearly as bad (or as frequent). That being said, I wanted it gone. Completely. So what's a green beauty lover to do?
I'll tell you what: She experiments. I've used a lot of skincare products, but no kits specifically designed to treat acne. It wasn't long before I noticed Juice Beauty's 30 Day Blemish Clearing Solution Kit was getting a lot of rave reviews. I already admired Juice Beauty's ethics, even though the two products I've tried from them haven't worked as good as hoped, so I figured I'd give them another shot. Plus, their 30 day kit was on sale (got to love a good bargain right?). So, here we are. Want to see the results? I must warn you: Some of the later images in this article are pictures of me without makeup on. Please do not pass judgement. I decided to be as candid with you about this as possible, so please be respectful. The review is also formatted differently in order to cover more ground, but I promise you it's not (too) long winded. Now, without further ado, here's my review!

Juice Beauty
The Basics

About the company
Juice Beauty specializes in skincare and makeup that's vegan, cruelty-free, natural, and organic. Their products are made with over 70% certified USDA organic ingredients, but there are products that bare the USDA organic seal, meaning they contain over 95% organic ingredients. Either way, Juice Beauty's ethics are impeccable for many reasons: Their product boxes are made with recycled or FSC certified paper, printed with soy ink & sourced in the USA; They use solar powered manufacturing for many of their products; and they have focused donations & partnerships with The Breast Cancer Fund, EWG, and the Representation Project. Plus they're formulated without a bunch of icky ingredients in conventional beauty products. Here's a list of what they never use: Parabens, petroleum, pesticides, propylene or butylene glycols, talc, carbon black, phthalates, sulfates, PEGs, TEA, DEA, GMO, silicones, artificial dyes or synthetic fragrances. If that doesn't make you happy, maybe this will: Gwyneth Paltrow is Juice Beauty’s Creative Director of Makeup. Nice to see Hollywood get involved in the green beauty movement too, isn't it?

I feel it is only fair to let you all know how long this trail lasted. That's why this review is being published the same day I end the routine (plus, I already had most of it written).

Brand: Juice Beauty
Items: 4 main items + eco-bamboo washcloth + samples (not included in this review)

The Products + The Steps

Step 1 - Blemish Clearing Cleanser

Cost: $22

My thoughts: I really liked this cleanser, which is a plus since the last cleanser I used from Juice Beauty really irritated my skin and eyes. This got the job done though, and got rid of all the makeup on my face without being too harsh. It was a little messy when I opened it, but most of the products were because they were watery and lightweight.

Application: To use I just wet my face a little bit and rubbed it in. In the morning I avoided contact with my eyes, but at night I didn't because I had eye makeup on I needed to get rid of. Then I rinsed and wiped using the bamboo face cloth that came with my purchase (handy eh?). I used this cleanser twice a day (morning and night), every day.

Ingredients: organic juices of citrus medica limonum (organic lemon juice)*, prunus avium (organic sweet cherry juice)*, vitis vinifera (organic white grape juice)*, aloe barbadensis (organic aloe juice)*, decyl glucoside, vegetable glycerin, sodium hydroxide, gluconolactone, sclerotium gum, xanthan gum, lysolecithin, pullulan, sodium benzoate, sodium levulinate, organic botanical extracts of salvia officinalis (organic sage leaf extract)*, taraxacum officinale(dandelion leaf extract), melissa officinalis (lemon balm leaf extract), algae extract, tocopherol (vitamin e), retinyl palmitate (vitamin a), citrus aurantifolia (lime oil), tetrasodium glutamate diacetate, sodium anisate, citric acid, litsea cubeba (may chang), citrus aurantium amara (organic bitter orange)* and cananga odorata (organic ylang ylang)*pure essential oils
* = certified organic ingredient

Step 2 - Blemish Clearing Serum

Cost: $29

My thoughts:
I liked this serum because I did notice a difference in the areas I applied it to. Pimples I had one day were gone 1-2 days later. Granted, it could be because I was using this serum with all the other products, but I have a feeling this serum played a big role in it. After all, it's designed to unclog pores, reduce breakouts, and even skin tone.

Application: To use, I just applied a light layer to my entire face (sometimes just on specific spots) after cleansing with the Blemish Clearing Cleanser. I used this serum twice a day (morning and night), every day.

Ingredients: organic juices of vitis vinifera (organic white grape juice)*, pyrus malus (organic apple juice)*, aloe barbadensis (organic aloe juice)*, citrus medica limonum (organic lemon juice)*, vegetable glycerin, sclerotium gum, algin, salix alba (willow bark extract), allantoin, decyl glucoside, panthenol (vitamin b5), magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (vitamin c), tocopherol (vitamin e), salvia officinalis (sage leaf oil), ubiquinone (coq10), saccharum officinarum (sugar cane juice), organic botanical extracts of camellia sinensis (organic white tea leaf extract)*, camellia oleifera (organic green tea extract)*, lavandula angustifolia (organic lavender extract)*, chamomilla recutita(organic chamomile extract)*, melissa officinalis (lemon balm leaf extract), algae extract, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, citric acid, lavandula angustifolia (lavender)* and boswellia serrata (frankincense)* pure essential oils.

* = certified organic ingredient

Step 3 - Oil-Free Moisturizer

Cost: $28

My thoughts:
I wasn't too crazy about this moisturizer. It wasn't that it was bad, but compared to other ones I've used in the past, it didn't leave my skin feeling luxurious, hydrated, and smooth. Rather, it left my skin feeling a little cakey. I actually had to be careful and not apply more than a dab the size of a dime, lest my face turn into a grease machine. To be fair, it was easy to forget about if I applied the right amount, and my skin certainly wasn't dry during the full 30-day experience.

Application: To use I just smoothed a dime-sized drop all over my face (and any some on my neck), after applying the Blemish Clearing Serum. I used this moisturizer twice a day (morning and night), every day.

Ingredients: organic juices of pyrus malus (organic apple juice)*, vitis vinifera (organic white grape juice)*, punica granatum (organic pomegranate juice)*, aloe barbadensis (organic aloe juice)*, vegetable glycerin, simmondsia chinensis (organic jojoba seed)*, sesamum indicum (organic sesame seed)*, cetearyl alcohol, cetearyl glucoside, hydroxypropyl starch phosphate, persea gratissima (avocado), citrus aurantifolia (lime), caprylyl glycol, capryl hydroxamic acid, ethylhexyl (octyl) palmitate, xanthan gum, organic botanical extracts of cucumis sativus (organic cucumber extract)*, salvia officinalis (organic sage leaf extract)*, taraxacum officinale (dandelion leaf extract), melissa officinalis (lemon balm leaf extract), algae extract, panthenol (vitamin b5), ascorbyl palmitate (vitamin c), sodium pca, tetrasodium glutamate diacetate, sodium hyaluronate (vegetable hyaluronic acid), sodium hydroxide, citrus aurantium (sweet neroli) and cinnamomum camphora (ho wood) pure essential aromas.

Step 4 - Green Apple Peel Blemish Clearing Peel

Cost: $39

My thoughts:
Out of all the products received, I thought this one was the most effective. On the paper I received along with this kit, it said "88% of participants saw definite to significant enhanced skin tone and texture with the Green Apple Peel treatment immediately", and I'd have to agree with the majority. The first time I used it, I noticed an immediate difference in my pore size, and a reduction in dark spots/redness. It was definitely impressive.

Application: To use I just smoothed the Green Apple Blemish Clearing Peel all over my face - it had the same sort of consistency as the serum, which made it easy to apply, since it was on the watery side. Once I applied a generous layer to my face, I left it on for at least 10 minutes, then rinsed. I used this 2 times a week as a night treatment only.

Ingredients: organic juices of pyrus malus (organic apple juice)*, citrus medica limonum (organic lemon juice)*, aloe barbadensis (organic aloe juice)*, glycolic acid, vegetable glycerin, hydroxypropyl starch phosphate, sodium hydroxide, capryl hydroxamic acid, sclerotium gum, lysolecithin, pullulan, caprylyl glycol, vitis vinifera (grape seed extract), ascorbic acid (vitamin c), tetrasodium glutamate diacetate, magnesium aspartate, zinc gluconate, copper gluconate.

The Results

                     Day 1                                                Day 30

I have no makeup on in both these images. These are shots taken after I followed the step-by-step procedure I explained above. These photos have not been edited in any way. It may be hard to see here (I did only use my phone camera, after all), but in some ways my skin looks a little bit worse after the 30 days are up. What do you think?

Final thoughts: While these products worked pretty good, I feel like my skin has stood relatively the same. During the whole time I used these products I never went a day without a pimple (which I'm used to, but was hoping wouldn't be the case). While I can't complain and say I have the most terrible, unruly skin ever, I was a little disappointed. I was expecting something a little more than what I got. In the two pictures above, it looks like I have more dark spots on day 30 than on day 1. While the skin products were high quality, produced ethically, and non-irritating, it's clear to me they're not necessarily what my skin needs right now. I did see improvement in the pimples I treated with them, but the pimples didn't altogether go away, as I had hoped they would. According to the paper I received with my package, "94% [of people] saw definite improvement to complete clearing within 4 weeks". Unfortunately, I am not one of the majority this time. However, that doesn't mean I despise Juice Beauty, or that it couldn't work for someone else. I just think my skin wants something else right now. To be honest, I had less pimples when I was following my EWG skincare routine, plus my skin felt as smooth as silk. Not to mention I might have to start thinking about internal solutions, not just external ones (after all, acne is linked to hormones, and I have a sneaking suspicion I have a hormone imbalance of some sort). Did you know PMS, what you eat, what you drink, and how often you exercise can all effect acne? It's not just about clogging your pores with makeup (greenified makeup or not). With that said, I think I'll start listening more to my body, looking into hormonal balancing, and going back to my old skincare routine for now. However, if you love Juice Beauty products, have acne, and want to greenify your skincare routine, this is definitely worth looking into. These products do work, but they just didn't work enough for me. If you decide to try them, let me know! I'd love to hear your opinions.

Review: September Sunday Mood Box - Glow

Tuesday, September 13, 2016

By: Ariana Palmieri
I love finding green start-up businesses on Instagram, and Sunday Mood Box is one of them. This monthly subscription box caught my eye right away, especially when it promised great things like natural beauty products, organic and eco-friendly bath goodies, handmade jewelry, and more. It just recently started and this is their first box ever. The theme for it is "Glow", and all the products in this box are designed to give the subscriber a lovely "glow". I just received the box in the mail not too long ago and am super pleased with what's inside. Want to see what's to love? Keep reading.

The Basics

About the company
Sunday Mood Box was founded on two things: A love for subscription boxes and indie brands. The creator of Sunday Mood box is the sort of girl that "loves to read, is conscious about the environment, loves animals, has a nostalgic soul, is into the arts, music and culture". Expect these loves to transgress into her monthly boxes,  as you'll find "an eclectic mix of indie brands" that range from vegan beauty lines to unique household items, to healthy treats. Each box will have a theme (the September theme was "Glow"), and the items you get will correlate to it. This September box was the first of its kind, but the brand launched their website July 16. On the website you can purchase your payment plan: Billed monthly (costs $44 per month), 3 month pre-pay ($132), 6 month pre-pay ($244), or 12 month pre-pay ($460). All plans come with free shipping, unless you're buying from Canada ($10), or internationally ($20). They do ship worldwide though, and the coolest part? They use recycled boxes with shredded recycled newspaper print inside to pad the contents. You don't have to worry if this box will meet your ethical standards either: Each box will be 100% natural, organic, vegan, and cruelty-free. Sound like a good deal? If not, you can cancel any time (so no worries, Sunday Mood's got you covered).

Lavender & Amethyst Natural Bar Soap
Soapnotica

Why you want it: This bar of soap was so beautifully aromatic that it made the entire box smell like lavender (plus it has a beautiful amethyst crystal in it!).

Its value: Approximately $7 (unfortunately, this specific bar of soap was made specially for Sunday Mood Box users, so I can't direct link it!)

My review: Don't you love soap that's made with natural ingredients and a crystal? I know I do! You might not think the combo could work, but it does. Here's the thing to remember about crystals in soap: While they may not enhance the soap's ability to clean you physically, it does promote spiritual cleansing. After all, amethyst is a very relaxing stone, perfectly in sync with the therapeutic benefits of lavender. I love how raw the soap itself looks, how handmade and personal it is. The texture of the soap is smooth, but there are no rounded edges like conventional soap. Don't get me wrong, I like pretty soap molds, but there's a charm to the funky shape of this soap I can't quite explain. Since this is body soap, its application process is pretty self explanatory. When I used it, I liked how nourishing the soap was for my skin (made it nice and smooth). The scent it left on my skin was subtle, but pleasant (not as strong as when the soap was dry). The best part was that this soap is so easy to hold and use in the shower. I don't have to worry about it slipping out of my hand. Before I got this, I was using another soap bar my mom had bought. While I adored the soap's smell, it was really big, bulky, and oval shaped. It didn't allow much grip, and multiple times it slipped right out of my hand. Not exactly ideal. This lavender scented soap is so much easier to work with though. I haven't dropped it once thanks to its rectangular shape. I'm at a conflict of interest when it comes to this soap though: I want to finish it quickly so I can add the amethyst crystal to my collection, but I don't want to finish it because it smells so amazing. In the end though, I really can't lose (I'll always have the amethyst crystal after all). So if you like homemade, crystal infused bars of soap, Soapnotica might be the way to go!

Rose Quartz Shimmer Mist
Miss Violet Lace

Why you want it: This beautiful smelling mist will give your skin a sweet, rose-kissed sparkle.

Its value: $20-30 (unfortunately, this specific mist was made specially for Sunday Mood Box users, so I can't direct link it!)

My review: With me, everything's coming up roses (and rose quartz is no exception). This rose quartz shimmer mist doesn't actually have rose quartz in it (though I wouldn't mind), but it doesn't remind me of my rose quartz sphere a lot thanks to its beautiful color (check out my review of that here to see what I mean). What I liked about this (aside from the rose extract used in it), was how shimmery it was. I absolutely adored shaking the bottle just to see the mica swirl around in it hypnotically. This was my first time using a natural shimmer mist (used unnatural ones when I was little), so I was excited to give this a try. It's not just for your face, so you can use it anywhere. I found when I sprayed some on my face (I aimed it at my cheeks the most), some would get onto other areas of my body by accident. This wasn't such a bad thing though because it created a very subtle, glittery effect. I really liked how refreshing it was to use too. The smell of roses reminded me of my favorite rose water mist (which I also spritz my face with). If I want more controlled application, I simply spray some into the palm of my hands and then apply it to the areas I want to highlight (like my cheekbones). I'd definitely recommend giving this a go, but unfortunately I couldn't find this product listed on the company's website (they do have other equally as beautiful natural beauty products though, so happy browsing!).

Ingredients
Distilled water, mica, titanium dioxide, organic rose extract, vegetable derived glycerin, purple carrot extract, hibiscus infusion.

Gemstone Yogi Bracelet
Luminescent Tides

Why you want it: If you love handmade bracelets, especially ones made with stunning gems, this is for you.

Its value: $8 - $25 (Each bracelet varies in price - unfortunately, this specific bracelet was made specially for Sunday Mood Box users, so I can't direct link it!)

My review: Most of you already know this, but I love bracelets. Whenever you see me, I'm wearing the same ones too, and if I'm not, I feel naked. They're a part of me as much as my own skin. I put them on with my outfit every day and while I have many different bracelets, I have favorites. This one is my most recent favorite. I don't go anywhere without it. It's made with stunning pink zebra jasper beads and a raw amazonite stone. I've seen jasper before, and I have a tumbled red jasper stone, but I've never seen pink zebra jasper before. I can see where it got its name: The pattern on it resembles a zebra's. The amazonite is a gorgeous aquamarine color too, and it's rougher in texture than the pink zebra jasper beads because it's raw. I get a very earthy, grounding, empowering vibe from this bracelet. It makes me feel connected to the earth as well as confident. All in all, I'm very impressed with this pretty yogi bracelet and I'll definitely be wearing it on a consistent basis (maybe even the next time I do yoga). Unfortunately, since this was a custom order for the Sunday Mood Box (a reoccurring theme, as you can see), I can't direct you to a link. However, Luminescent Tides sells other beautiful gemstone bracelets worth looking into that you just might fall for (check the link above to get browsing!).

Goddess of the Sea Sugar Scrub
Sam Wish

Why you want it: This sugar scrub is completely organic and made with nourishing coconut oil that hydrates skin and makes it super smooth after just one use.

Its value: $10

My review: I'm fairly new to the world of body scrubs. The only other one I've tried was from Prim Botanicals (and it was amazing), so it's exciting to try another. As soon as I opened the bottle, I could tell the green color was from the spirulina powder used in the scrub. The rose petals combined with the cedar and marjoram essential oil created an interesting smell. I can't say it was my favorite scent, but it was very soothing and non-irritating to my sensitive nose (a huge plus in my book). Like the other body scrub I've used, the application was messy. I had to stand over the bathtub while applying it because the sugar would crumble and fall off. Unfortunately, the rose petals didn't stay on my skin either. I used my fingers to scoop some onto my skin and rubbed it in (this didn't come with an application spoon like the Prim Botanicals scrub did). However, the coconut oil in the scrub almost instantly nourished my skin as soon as I applied it. I could feel it doing its job. After I had applied the scrub to the desired areas ( I decided to just put it on my legs this time), I waited about 10 minutes before washing it off. During this time I decided to stand and scroll through Instagram (gotta check those notifications, you know?) to keep myself occupied. I didn't want to sit or move too much because then the scrub might fall off (and the last thing I wanted was to get sugar all over the bathroom floor - ever step on a few random grains of sand barefoot before? It feels exactly like that - and that stuff hurts). When I finally washed it off, it felt so nice. My skin was super smooth and conditioned. I wouldn't say this experience was better than the Prim Botanical body scrub I tried, but it was still a good experience overall. I'd definitely recommend giving this scrub a try, especially if you want a scrub with a more relaxing, gentle scent (the Prim Botanicals one was grapefruit scented and very energizing in contrast).

Jasmine Organic & Mint Sencha Tea Crystals
Pique

Why you want it: If you love tea, but hate waiting for it to steep, this crystallized tea is for you.

Its value: $7.99 (Both teas combined would be $16)

My review: Personally, I don't mind waiting for tea to steep. After all, the longer you let it steep, the stronger the flavor. However, there's something fun about crystallized tea: Not only is it quick, but it takes me back to the days I would make iced tea using powder. This powder wasn't organic or natural (it was loaded with sugar, in fact), but there was a simplicity to making it that I've missed. With these tea crystals, all I needed to do was add them to hot water and watch them dissolve. I mixed them around using a spoon to help spread it, but other than that there's not much to it. I'm sure I could've added it to cold water to create iced tea too, but at the time I made it I was in the mood for hot tea. Plus, solutions dissolve easier in hot water than cold. I'm sure it would've took longer (and a lot more mixing) to blend it into the cold water. Either way, I couldn't go wrong (and I can't say no to tea). The best part is that this is so healthy: After all, it's organic. I personally liked the Jasmine Tea better than the Mint Sencha Green Tea, but only by a smidgen. Both were absolutely delicious. However, if you tend to like floral teas better, or prefer relaxing teas, jasmine is the way to go (and just as a small side note, jasmine is also a known aphrodisiac, if anyone is interested). The Mint Sencha Green Tea was yummy too though, and it had a refreshing taste perfect for the morning. I actually drank that one with my breakfast and the Jasmine Tea before bed, which is completely fitting. The Jasmine Tea relaxed me completely while the Mint Sencha Green Tea energized me. All in all, I highly recommend both these organic tea blends, especially if you're a health conscious person who's constantly on the go.

Ingredients
Jasmine Tea: Organic jasmine tea
Mint Sencha Green Tea: Organic green tea, organic spearmint

The (quick) rundown

The pros: The pros completely outweigh the cons.
  1. I really liked the selection Sunday Mood Box curated this month.
  2. I loved receiving full sized samples of everything.
  3. I was impressed by how well everything performed: I didn't have a favorite product - they were all my favorite!
  4. I still have more left over from each sample (except the one-use tea packets).
  5. I love how each product is all natural and made with organic ingredients (if not completely organic).
  6. I loved that there's a theme to each of these monthly boxes (similar to Goddess Provisions boxes or Petit Vour boxes) - and I liked the "Glow" theme for this month.
  7. A lot of the businesses Sunday Mood Box partnered with are home-run green businesses that can be found on Etsy!
  8. I really love Sunday Mood Box's Instagram account and the sneak peaks they give of the future boxes they got coming up (Hint: Like vegan leather and cats?).
The cons: The cons are ridiculously low.
  1. The box itself is pricey ($44 a month), especially for a recent college grad.
  2. Most of the products seemed to be customized specifically for the Sunday Mood Box - while this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it means I can't refer you guys to specific product links.
Conclusion: Considering this was their first box, Sunday Mood Box did a great job. The work they put into the box was hard to miss and all the products were enjoyable. I highly recommend people to subscribe to this box because they've got some amazing things coming! After all, according to their website, they'll be featuring an "eclectic mix of indie brands, vegan beauty lines, organic and eco-friendly bath & beauty products, handmade jewelry, cool niche household items, art prints, specialty teas, healthy treats, minimalist goodies and more". If that's not something to get excited about, I don't know what is!

100% Pure Launches Their First Completely USDA Organic Skincare Line

Friday, September 9, 2016

By: Ariana Palmieri
I'm in love with 100% Pure (you knew that already), but I've always been bummed they never had any certified organic products. You know, products with the little USDA symbols stamped right on front? Well good news: Now they do! 100% Pure has been doing some mega revamping this summer, and this was a huge step in the right direction. While all their products are completely natural, safe, cruelty-free, and ecofriendly, the USDA seal of approval shows they mean business. After all, it's not exactly easy to get that seal, or maintain it: Businesses have to abide by strict USDA rules at all times. I've talked about the USDA organic seal before, so I won't go too into it here. That being said, I'm so incredibly happy to show all of you these amazing new products. Below I've listed the entire skincare line (with pictures, descriptions, cost, and ingredients) so you can browse and shop until your heart is content. There are 4 different collections to choose from too (unfortunately I believe most of the Organic Matcha Anti-Aging collection is out of stock right now), but otherwise, enjoy!
