I Tried 3 Samples From The Detox Market: Here's What I Think

By: Ariana Palmieri
I'm a firm believer in taking care of ones skin from the inside-out. What you put in your body is just as important as what you put on it. That's why I was so excited when The Detox Market sent me natural beauty samples: These products are perfect for maintaining glowing, beautiful skin the natural way all winter long. I got to sample Moon Juice's Beauty Dust, RMS Beauty's "Un" Cover-Up, and Shiva Rose's Rose Facial Oil, all thanks to The Detox Market. If you've never heard of them before, you should totally check out their website. They're kind of like the Sephora of the natural beauty world in the sense they curate and sell products from multiple green beauty brands. You can find everything from makeup to hair care while browsing their site, or you can shop by brand name. The Detox Market also offers free USPS shipping and surprise samples on any purchase over $80, which is really awesome. Unlike Sephora, the products they curate never contain any harmful chemicals and are always cruelty-free. While not all of their products are vegan, they do have vegan-friendly options available. If you want to learn more about what ingredients are off-limits in their products, they have a whole page dedicated to it. It's actually pretty cool because it lists a bunch of harmful ingredients, explains their use, health concerns, and the sort of (conventional) beauty products you can find them in. Some toxins they list include aluminum, lead, parabens, and phthalates (among many others). Thankfully, you'll never have to worry about any of these ingredients being found in products they sell. If you've shopped there before, be sure to let me know in the comment section! Now, without further ado, here's my review.

Beauty Dust
Moon Juice

Why you want it: This herbal 'dust' can be added to any drink of your choice, hot or cold, and tastes great.

Its value: $30

My review: I've heard a lot about Moon Juice products, so I was really excited when The Detox Market sent me this sample. I've been wanting to try their products for a long time, but specifically their dusts. They offer an array of dusts, and this is just one of them. Other dusts include brain dust, action dust, power dust, goodnight dust and even spirit dust. Each 'dust' is supposed to help with different things, whether it be going to sleep or improving your complexion. This particular dust that I sampled is supposed to "expand my beauty, luster and glow from within", according to the packaging. Since I only received one sample of this beauty dust, I cannot say what my experience would've been had I continuously used it for several days. It was a one-time use only packet that I was supposed to rip open and pour into the drink of my choice. To be exact, the packet says "mix with 8 oz of hot or cold water, nut milk, coffee, tea, or smoothie". Since I wanted to taste what this herbal supplement would taste like on its own, I just added it to a mug of hot water. In a way, I was kind of drinking it like I would tea, only without the steeping. The coolest part about the beauty dust is that you don't need to steep it: It dissolves right into the water (or any liquid you decide to drink it with). Once I added it into the water, I mixed it up and was amazed to see the water had turned a deep dark brown color. It almost looked like coffee, which kind of scared me because I don't drink coffee. That said, when I tasted it, it sure wasn't coffee. It was such a nice blend of herbs with a pleasing taste. It reminded me a little bit of drinking hot cocoa for some reason (and not just because it looked similar to it). It had a hearty after taste that resembled pure, all-natural hot cocoa, minus the sugar. I actually really liked it and took my time drinking it. Since I have never tried half the herbs listed in this beauty dust, it's hard for me to describe the flavor. It wasn't spicy, sour, or bitter. It was warming with a gentle sweetness to it. Unfortunately, I would have to drink one per day to see any real effects of this beauty dust on my skin. According to The Detox Market's website, "This ancient empiric formula expands beauty through calming the nerves, increasing collagen and silica production, toning and firming tissue, and both hydrating and fortifying skin, hair, nails and cell membranes from the inside out". In the future, I'd love to try this stuff out again, only next time for a longer duration and on a daily basis, to see if all these benefits reign true. That said, it certainly did calm my nerves and help me relax. So cheers to that!

Wildcrafted: Pearl, Goji, Schizandra, Rehmannia, Lo Han Guo, Stevia

Shiva Rose

Why you want it: This aromatic facial oil will not only help reduce redness and dryness, but also opens up your heart chakra.

Its value: $105

My review: I've been following Shiva Rose for a while now and have been in love with her products pretty much the moment I laid eyes on them. Their packaging is beautiful (hard to see from this sample, but you can see it here), as well as their logo (it's a rose, duh). Each product is carefully crafted with lots of love, and the founder herself infuses each with good blessings (making it the perfect product for someone spiritually inclined - like myself). Though the prices on each Shiva Rose product is high, so is the quality. I have yet to see one Shiva Rose product I did not want. One of my life goals is to have her entire skincare line (just saying). This particular product is made with organic oils and even said to "open up the heart chakra," according to The Detox Market. That's because roses are almost automatically associated with the heart and have incredible healing, invigorating, and beautifying benefits. I'm also in love with how there's only 8 ingredients in this product, and each one is plant based. This product also helps reduce inflammation, slows aging, and creates cell-renewal. Considering it's winter and my skin is particularly dry (I blame lack of humidity), this product was a god send. I was so happy The Detox Market sent me this sample because my skin literally starts to flake in the winter. I applied this oil morning and night to all dry and inflamed areas (near any pimples I had) and did notice a difference. It wasn't immediate as far as reducing inflammation, but there was an immediate difference on the dry areas of my skin (mainly my cheeks, chin and forehead). That said, this oil is not heavy at all on the skin. It's actually quite airy and light, plus it smells absolutely phenomenal. It definitely can be used just for its aromatherapy benefits alone. It made my entire face smell like a rose for at least an hour after application (dreams do come true!). While I can't say all my acne cleared up and my dry skin is no more, I have seen a sharp reduction in both redness and flakiness after using this product. I still have more left too, even though I've been using it pretty much two weeks straight! Now that's impressive.

Ingredients
Organic Simmondsia chinensis ( Jojoba ) Oil, Organic Rosa canina (Rosehip Seed) Oil, Aleurites moluccans (Kukui Nut) Oil, Organic Argania Spinosa (Argan) Oil, Organic Camelina sativa (Camelina) Oil, Hippophae rhamnoides (Seed Buckthorn) Oil, Organic Rosa Damascena (Persian Rose) Essential Oil, Non-GMO Alpha-Tocopherol (Vitamin E) Oil.

Formulated in a high vibrational environment with love and blessings.

"Un" Cover-Up

Why you want it: This cover up applies super smooth and hides blemishes without needing to apply much at all.

Its value: $36

My review: As most of you know, I don't wear foundation. That said, my face is far from flawless. It's very rare for my face not to have some sort of blemish on it, be it acne, red spots, or dark spots. That's why I adore cover up: I only apply it to the areas I feel need it most. In order to ensure my face looks even and not blotchy, I prefer using cover ups that deliver the best results without sacrificing my health and ethics. I've heard about RMS Beauty's "Un" Cover-Up through multiple rave reviews and figured it was time for me to investigate. I'm so glad I did too: This stuff works! Once The Detox Market sent it to me, I immediately tried it. After applying my favorite all-natural primer from 100% Pure, I used my finger to dab the concealer onto any problem spots on my skin. It's not really a liquid concealer, but it's not a powder either. It's something in between and applied very smoothly to my skin. I rubbed and patted it in and was amazed at how well it blended with my skin coloring. It almost instantly made my blemishes vanish, and if it didn't, I just applied a little more. It can be layered without looking cakey and gross, which is very important to me. If anything, it helped moisturize my skin (something I certainly need in the winter - remember how I mentioned my skin flakes up in the winter?). Since this product is made with nourishing ingredients like coconut oil, cocoa butter and jojoba oil, I'm not too surprised at how velvety the application was. Unfortunately, it's not vegan-friendly because there's beeswax in it. That said, it is cruelty-free, so there's no need to worry. The concealer lasted me a while, but by the end of the day it had faded a little (even with primer). I'd say it lasted about 6-7 hours before starting to melt/fade a little, which is still pretty good. I still have plenty left too: I didn't need much to do the job, which is another big win in my book! I'm all about minimalist makeup. So in total, I would definitely recommend this to any non-vegan friends of mine!

Ingredients
Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil*, Cera Alba (Beeswax)*, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter*, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Tocopherol (non-GMO), Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary) Extract*, and may contain [+/-] Titanium Dioxide CI 77891, Iron Oxides CI 77492, CI 77491, CI 77499. *Certified Organic

The (quick) rundown

The pros: The pros completely outweigh the cons.
  1. I really admire The Detox Markets standards for clean, natural beauty.
  2. I love how they offers free shipping and free samples over any purchase over $80!
  3. I loved receiving all three of the samples I requested: They were so accommodating and friendly!
  4. I was impressed by how well everything performed, even though I would've liked to sample more of the Beauty Dust.
  5. I still have more left over from each sample (except for the Beauty Dust).
  6. I love how each product is all natural and made with organic ingredients.
  7. I love how there are many more brands to choose from on their website other than just these three.
  8. I really love their Instagram account (super inspirational and great pictures!).
The cons: The cons are ridiculously low.
  1. Each product on its own would've costed me a lot at full size.
  2. I would've liked at least 3 packets of the Beauty Dust sample so I could've given a more in-depth review of my experience with it.
Conclusion: I can't help but recommend The Detox Market to all my followers. Even if none of the products I reviewed spoke to you, there are bound to be others on their site that do. While it can be hard to find which green beauty brands are perfect for you, or where to start, The Detox Market is making it one step easier. They stock so many in one place it's impossible to have an excuse not to try one! My advice? Go to their website and shop via skincare, makeup, or hair care. Once you find a product you really like, check out the brand it's made by. Chances are, if you like one product from them, you're bound to like a few more. Happy shopping!

How to Have an Eco-Friendly Christmas

Thursday, December 22, 2016

By: Ariana Palmieri
Christmas is a wonderful time of the year, but not always an eco-friendly time. After all, stores this time of year encourage massive consumerism, which takes a toll on the environment: Most products are made in environment-polluting factories and are made with non-recycled resources. Not to mention any imported items generate added pollution to the environment: The farther an item travels, the more fossil fuels are burned. That said, there are ways to make sure your carbon footprint doesn’t double in size this time of year. Here are some tips on how to make this Christmas your most eco-friendly one yet. And don’t worry, it won’t cost you a fortune either.

Buy a real tree (better yet an organic one), and then recycle it

You might be wondering which is better for the environment: A plastic tree or a real tree? While there are certainly pros and cons to owning both, buying a real tree is the better option. Why you ask? Because, plastic trees are made using plastic polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and the toxic chemical dioxin is released during PVC production. Not to mention PVC also contains hormone-disrupting plastic softeners called phthalates. Yuck. Oh, and if that’s not enough to make you cringe, many plastic trees also contain lead. The worst part is, even if you wanted to recycle it, it couldn’t be recycled. Only certain plastics are recyclable and PVC is not one of them. Instead, it will just sit in a landfill. For all eternity.

While real trees aren’t flawless either, they certainly have more pros than cons. At least with real trees, they can be recycled or even replanted. While few Christmas trees rarely come from forests anymore, they are grown on plantations available throughout all 50 states and for each tree that's cut down, another is planted. That makes it virtually impossible to find a tree that isn’t locally grown (which is great for the environment – the closer the distance, the smaller the carbon footprint). The only cons with real trees is that they can be riddled with pests and pesticides. To avoid this, try buying an organic Christmas tree. Then, when the holiday season is over, have it turned into mulch or find an area to re-plant it. If you’re still adamantly against both options, you can always just buy an artsy Christmas tree made from recycled materials, or try planting a tree outside your home.

Make DIY eco-friendly ornaments + décor

I personally love making DIY anything, but Christmas décor? That's fun stuff. Instead of buying new ornaments and decorations this year, just DIY new ones, while re-using old decorations from last year. Some DIY ornaments that are fun to make are glitter-dipped pine cones (I only use biodegradable glitter), popcorn/cranberry strings, cinnamon dough ornaments, and light bulb snowmen. There are tons more ornaments to make using items found in nature too, such as twigs, rocks, berries, and sprigs of evergreen plants. You just have to get a little creative. You can also make eco-friendly wreaths using natural materials such as pinecones, twigs, loose pine branches, or even succulents. Don't forget to hang an eco-friendly stocking on your fireplace! If you like to upcycle items (I know I do) why not try painting some empty glass bottles using holiday colors (like red and green), or making paper ornaments using day old newspaper? The possibilities are endless.

Use DIY wrapping paper

It's safe to say paper is one of the biggest victims on Christmas: Have you seen how much wrapping paper is produced and wasted? Literally, when my family is done unwrapping things on Christmas, there is not one, but two heaping garbage bags filled with only wrapping paper. Thankfully, it gets recycled, but that isn't the case for all wrapping paper. Instead of buying new wrapping paper this year, try using some DIY hacks to lessen the burden on the environment. Instead, wrap your gifts with newspaper, old magazine pages, or even leaves lying around your garden. To make leaf wrapping paper, just glue or tape them together to create one big sheet, then use as you would actual wrapping paper. This technique works best with fresh leaves, as dried leaves would crumble and crack. However, try to avoid using too much glue or tape, as this is not biodegradable: Instead use ribbons to keep your gifts held together. You can also re-use any old gift bags you may have that were given to you in the past to put presents in. Here are some other eco-friendly gift wrapping ideas if none of the ones I listed speak to you. Remember: Not everything needs to be gift wrapped. You can simply put your gifts in plain cardboard boxes and decorate them any way you see fit (drawing nature-inspired pictures on the box is a good idea). That said, if you must use wrapping paper on Christmas, here are some fun ways to recycle wrapping paper besides throwing it in a recycling bin.

Reduce light usage

I'll admit I love a nicely lit house on Christmas Eve, but the environment sure doesn't. The amount of energy wasted on all those lights is enormous, not to mention wasteful if left on all day (which some places do, mind you). My advice? Use only LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights to decorate your home and tree this year. That, and keep them off during the day. The reason I suggest LED lighting is because LED holiday lights use up to 95% less energy than larger, traditional holiday bulbs. They also last up to 100,000 hours when used indoors. Also, with LED lights, if one burns out, the rest of the strand will still be lit. That said, even with LED lights in place, it's still a good idea to keep your indoor and outdoor lighting simple. Your house can still look attractive and beautiful without hundreds of lights. Personally, I'm a sucker for blue Christmas lights, but that's just me.

Make your own gifts or buy local, handmade gifts

I adore making homemade gifts for people. I feel like people appreciate them even more when they know you took the time out of your busy day to make them something. Plus, you can personalize a homemade gift any way you see fit without it costing an arm and a leg. DIY gifts don't have to be super fancy either: They can be as simple as making someone eye makeup and lipstick or as complex as making mittens out of an old sweater. Either way, you have the creative license to do as you please. Note that you can never go wrong with crafting DIY body scrubs, lotions, foot soaks, or bath balms (all available on Pinterest)! Just don't craft the ones that require any artificial dyes or fake fragrance (essential oils are better). For the men in your life, maybe try your hand at making all-natural cologne, rosemary pine beard balm, or citrus honey scotch ale soap.

If you're not in the mood to DIY anything, try to buy handmade items instead. Etsy is a great source to find handmade goodies anyone in your family would adore. The best part about Etsy is that any purchase you make from them goes to supporting a small business owner, instead of a corporation. Since most corporations are known for polluting the environment to produce their products, it's always better to support small businesses. As always, you should still read what ingredients are in the product you're looking to buy, even if it's on Etsy, to ensure it's an eco-friendly purchase. Here are some eco-friendly Etsy gifts worth looking at to get you started. Better yet, if you know any small businesses in your neighborhood that sell all-natural products, be sure to check in with them. Vintage shops are also great places to shop because they're inexpensive and can have fantastic, well-preserved items (like tea sets and classic records) someone in your family is bound to love.

Happy Holidays!

A Full Moon Gratitude Ceremony for a Happy Holiday Season

Wednesday, December 14, 2016

By: Ariana Palmieri
Stressing out this holiday season? I understand: Holiday blues is a real thing. That said, it's important to take a moment to step back and reflect on all you have. Thankfully, December's Full Cold Moon is upon us: The moon is in Gemini and encourages us to all slow down and be real with one another. While the first day of the full moon was technically yesterday (December 13), this 4-step full moon ceremony is still relevant. It's great for humbling you, grounding you, and helping you realizing you don't need hundreds of gifts to be happy this holiday season. What you have right now is enough.

1. Settle down, breathe, and think of 3 positive things in your life.

Take a moment to get yourself in a relaxed state. You may light some incense, play some soothing music, or light a candle. Sit down, close your eyes, and take a few deep breaths to let go of the day's woes. When you're ready, think of at least three people, situations, or places you're grateful for. Maybe it's your significant other, a good grade, or your new home. Focus on each and let yourself feel gratitude. Stay in this feeling for as long as you like.

2. Make a list of what you're grateful for.

Now grab a pen and paper so you can list everything you just envisioned mentally. You don't have to put too much detail into this: It can just be the names of the people, places, things, or situations you're grateful for. That said, feel free to put the reason why you're grateful for them down, if you feel so inclined. The more energy you add to this, the more powerful the ceremony will be.

3. Burn your gratitude list.

The full moon is a time of release: Burning your list will help you let things go. If you don't feel comfortable burning the paper, you may shred it, bury it outside, or simply recycle it. The goal is to release attachment so you can welcome further abundance and happiness.

4. Say a positive affirmation.

This can be a simple "I am blessed" or something more intricate like, " I am grateful for all the good that comes my way." Make sure to speak it out loud, and to say whatever comes from your heart. You may say it once, or, if it feels right, repeat it three times. Either way, what you say should resonate with your soul. When you're finished, make sure to put any fire you may have lit out! Now, you are charged with positive gratitude energy that will make this holiday season all the better.
